Joseph-Armand Bombardier was a Canadian inventor and businessman, best known for his development of the snowmobile and the founding of Bombardier Inc. He was born on April 16, 1907, in Valcourt, Quebec, and is considered a pioneer in the field of transportation.

In his early years, Bombardier was fascinated by mechanics, particularly how vehicles could operate in difficult conditions such as snow and ice. In 1935, at the age of 28, he designed and built the first practical snowmobile, which he called the “B7.” This was a vehicle intended to help people in rural Quebec access essential services during the long, harsh winters when snow covered the roads. Bombardier’s invention was a tracked vehicle, which gave it the ability to travel on deep snow, unlike traditional wheeled vehicles.

Bombardier’s company, initially known as L’Auto-Neige Bombardier Limitée, was founded in 1942. Over time, he improved the design of his snowmobiles and expanded the company’s product range, eventually leading to the creation of the first commercially successful snowmobile. In the 1950s, the company shifted from focusing on snowmobiles for personal use to developing vehicles for industrial and military purposes.

By the 1960s, Bombardier expanded further into the transportation industry. The company developed and manufactured aircraft, trains, and buses, making Bombardier Inc. a global name in transportation. One of the major achievements of the company was the development of the CRJ series of regional jets, which revolutionized air travel for smaller airports.
